garden prep

Hello!  I'm sorry for the month-long hiatus.  A sick dad, mama, and baby boy have needed some extra down time.  Now that we're almost all feeling 100%, I am going to try to do some catch up blogging about something I am SO looking forward to working on: our garden!  When I looked at the calendar and saw the words "first day of spring" I just had to welcome it by purchasing seeds for our garden.  Last year, we learned quite a bit by trial and error so this year will definitely be more successful than last year (pending a summer that isn't more hot or dry than last summer of course)!  Here's a little run down of what we're planting this year:

Yaya F-1 Carrots
Roma Tomatoes
Celebrity Hybrid Tomatoes
Jalapeño Peppers
Chinese Giant Red Bell Peppers
Marketmore 76 Cucumbers
Solitaire Hybrid Watermelon
Candy Hybrid Onions
Red Onions
Organic Russett Norkotah Potatoes
Romaine Lettuce
Buttercrunch Lettuce

Almost everything we're planting this year is different than last year with the exception of the Celebrity Hybrid tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions.  We're sticking with that variety of tomato because it actually tasted like a fresh homegrown garden tomato despite the heat and lack of water.  The cucumbers and red onions also turned out perfectly for our favorite summer salad (hint: the main ingredients are sliced cucumbers and red onions, vinegar, salt, and pepper and a photo of it can be found by clicking here).

I decided to go with different varieties of everything else to accommodate our taste buds.  :)  For example the Roma tomatoes will work great for canning sauce and the jalapeño peppers will add a little kick to homemade salsa.

Last year we didn't plant nearly enough onions or potatoes so we're doubling the amount we planted last year so that we can enjoy them further into the fall and hopefully winter!

As soon as I find time, I am going to get the peppers, tomatoes, and watermelon started indoors.  I've learned that it is recommended for those of us in zone four (click here to lookup your zone) to start the seeds indoors anywhere from six to eight weeks before the last frost.

To free up some precious garden real estate, I might plant a container of herbs (cilantro, basil, and dill) and just keep it on our back porch.  I haven't quite figured out this part yet.

I hope this post has inspired you to "think spring" and ditch those winter blues!  If anyone has any questions just leave a comment and I'll be more than happy to ask my mother-in-law.  :)  Ha!  I'm just a rookie!

a birthday celebration

Kurt turned one last Saturday and we celebrated right on schedule with a party for our little boy.  He had a great time eating his own homemade birthday cake and we had a great time hosting the big party.  It's something how fast they grow up!  Just a year ago we were patiently waiting for our baby to arrive and now he's walking around and learning all sorts of new tricks.

God, thank you for giving us this sweet boy!  He is so special to us and we can't imagine everyday life without him.  Through him, You are teaching us so many things that we wouldn't have experienced otherwise.  :)

someone was happy to see his dad

Luke left Monday morning for a three-day ice fishing trip on Mille Lacs Lake.  Kurt got to see his daycare friends for those three days and I think that was a good distraction for him because it wasn't until Luke got home that Kurt realized he was gone.  His reaction was priceless!  He was SO happy and he couldn't stop smiling.

a sneak peak at my quilting project

Who doesn't love getting a little mail?  Three sweet little packages came in the mail for me today filled with fabric for a quilt I plan to make from the book Little Bits Quilting Bee.  My mom and dad gave me the book as a Christmas present.  Oh, and the photo is from my new iPhone 4!  I finally upgraded and to some people I'm still behind the curve.  Ha!

Merry Christmas from us to you!

Merry Christmas!  It's been non-stop family, food, Christmas music, and fun dice games since we left home Saturday morning.  It was so much fun that Kurt didn't want to nap or sleep and risk missing any of the action.  Of course he eventually did both, but it was a battle (for all: Mama, Dad, and Baby).  He also thought it was a good idea to scream the entire way home -- just in case we forgot how much he hates riding in the car.  Even while he was screaming, our hearts were filled with love for him and we were feeling very grateful to have him.  Grateful for all our family.  Grateful for Jesus.  Grateful for His love, mercy, and peace.  Let's rejoice in all things!  Merry Christmas to you and yours!

a frog party

My nephew had his fifth birthday party on Saturday and it was a frog-themed celebration.  We all wore something green and the three boys looked so festive!  It was a challenge getting a good photo, but one out of a dozen isn't bad in my book!

first snowfall

Last weekend the three of us got to enjoy winter's first snowfall!  I know I'm a little late to share the photos, but I caught the flu later that evening and have been laying low ever since.  As you can see, Kurt seemed to like the snow.  We're looking forward to more weekends like this one (minus the flu)!  :)
